Hawaiian Wedding Shirts: A Groom's Guide to Getting It Right

A Hawaiian beach wedding calls for a different kind of shirt than your everyday aloha wear. Here's how to choose one that looks intentional for the groom, not like an afterthought.

What Makes a Shirt "Wedding-Ready"

Everyday aloha shirts are built for bold color and maximum tropical energy. Wedding shirts work differently - they're designed to photograph well, coordinate easily across a wedding party, and feel a step more formal without losing the island spirit.

The biggest differences:

  • Lighter color palette. White, cream, ivory, and soft pastels dominate wedding shirt collections instead of the saturated reds and oranges common in everyday aloha prints.
  • Subtler prints. Delicate florals, tonal embroidery, or texture-based patterns replace the loud, busy designs typical of casual aloha shirts.
  • Cleaner construction. Wedding shirts are usually cut with a more tailored silhouette and finished with details like embroidered accents rather than printed all-over patterns.

Choosing the Right Shirt for the Groom

The groom's shirt should stand slightly apart from the groomsmen without breaking the overall color scheme. A few ways to do this:

  • A subtle embroidered detail (a collar trim, a contrast button) that the groomsmen's shirts don't have
  • A slightly different but complementary shade within the same palette
  • The same print as groomsmen but in a different fit (more tailored) to mark the groom visually without clashing

Coordinating With Groomsmen

For groomsmen, consistency matters more than individual standout details. Order all groomsmen shirts in the same print and color at the same time - sourcing the same style across multiple separate orders risks slight dye-lot or batch differences that show up in wedding photos.

If the wedding party includes a wide range of body types, check the size chart for the specific style before ordering - wedding shirt cuts can run differently than standard aloha shirts because of the more tailored fit.

Fabric Choice for a Beach Wedding

Rayon photographs beautifully — it drapes well and catches light softly, which matters for wedding photography. The tradeoff is it wrinkles and needs more careful handling before the ceremony.

Cotton holds its crisp look longer through a full day of photos, travel, and reception dancing, at the cost of slightly less drape in photos.

For most beach weddings, a lightweight cotton or poly cotton blend gives the best balance of all-day durability and a clean photographed look.

Timing the Order

Order wedding shirts well ahead of the date — at minimum 4–6 weeks out, longer if the wedding party is large or sizes run outside the standard range. Wedding-specific prints and colors are produced in smaller batches than everyday aloha prints and can sell out in popular sizes closer to peak wedding season.

The Day-Of Checklist

  • Steam or iron shirts the morning of, not the night before - rayon especially can develop new creases overnight even after careful storage
  • Have one spare shirt in a mid-range size on hand for any last-minute fit issues
  • Confirm every groomsman has tried their shirt on at least once before the wedding day, not just checked the size on the label
